Rebel Mouthed Books Manifesto

Rebel Mouthed Books is a radical space focused on decolonizing the literary world through writing and reading.

In this space, we are dedicated to:

  • Challenging the literary community to radically embody diversity, rather than accept the bare minimum,

  • Critically studying the politics in all writing, because no book, no writer, no story is a-political,

  • Encouraging writers to actively tackle oppression using their unique voice and perspective,

  • Empowering readers to demand better of the publishing industry,

  • Educating readers and writers about how White Supremacy manifests in the literary world and how we can liberate the joy of reading,

  • Debunking myths about publishing to realize more readers’ and writers’ dreams,

  • Celebrating and listening to the voices and stories of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, & People of Color), queer folks, disabled folks, Jews and Muslims, Palestinians, as well as migrants and refugees by purchasing, reading, and discussing their writing,

  • Building curiosity about non-dominant storytelling and storytellers,

  • Bridging the gap between reading and activism,

  • Supporting local literary communities so that local booksellers and libraries thrive, so that readers have ample access to the kinds of books they want to read, so that writers are cradled by their communities, and so that more and more people can engage with reading and writing meaningfully.

On Rebel Mouthed Books, you will find:

  • Book commentaries for readers,

  • Tips and resources for writers,

  • Researched, in-depth, awareness-building pieces about the writing process, publishing, and decolonized reading.
